Talented teenager Chris Douglas is among a group of six Bermuda national team players chosen to attend a cricket academy in Australia.
Douglas will join skipper Irving Romaine, Rodney Trott, Tamauri Tucker, Kyle Hodsoll, and Oronde Bascome in Brisbane from 8 Oct. to 12 Nov. National coach Gus Logie said the training would stand the players in good stead. “The opportunity to train and play in an atmosphere of discipline, passion and excellence and with some of the best players and coaches should be a dream come true for our players,” Logie said. “It is hoped their all-round game and personal development will be enhanced and their increased knowledge will benefit others when they return home,” he added. The Bermuda players will get the chance to train and play games with other players from England, Scotland, Holland, South Africa and Pakistan in addition to the academy training programme and academy-organised games. The players will also be assigned to local cricket clubs in Brisbane during their stay. Arnold Manders, Bermuda Cricket Board’s cricket development director, will also attend for part of the time to assess the players and work with the academy officials and coaches to experience how an international cricket academy programme is managed and structured. Teenager Douglas, who has been in a rich vein of form this summer, including making half centuries against Canada and West Indies in a recent Tri-Nation Series in Canada, said: “It will be a great experience as we are going to the home of the world champions and where cricket is like a religion. “In the long run, this will give us the opportunity to grow within the sport and come back as better cricketers and ready to represent our country,” Douglas said. Bermuda Cricket TeamThe Bermudian cricket team is the team representing Bermuda in the sport of cricket, governed by the Bermuda Cricket Board. The Bermuda Cricket Board was elected to Associate Membership of the International Cricket Council, the global ruling body for the sport, in 1966. Having performed in all eight ICC World Cup Qualifiers (formerly the ICC Trophy), the one-day competition for associate and affiliate members of the ICC, their most notable achievements have been finishing runners up in the 1982 competition and, more recently, finishing fourth in the 2005 tournament - granting them qualification to their first World Cup in the 2007 tournament. They failed to proceed past the Group Stage, following three heavy defeats - including the largest defeat ever recorded in a World Cup match at the hands of India.[1] The highlight of the Bermudian season is the annual Cup Match, played between two of the island's leading clubs of Somerset and St. George's, which was first played in 1902. The game is played in a carnival atmosphere over two public holidays.Bermuda Cricket TeamCurrent SquadThe latest Bermudian cricket squad was announced in preparation for the 2007 Cricket World Cup.
