ICC president Sonn dies aged 57
May 28, 2007
The International Cricket Council have led the tributes to their president Percy Sonn who has died aged 57.
South African Sonn experienced complications after a minor colon operation undergone during the recent World Cup.
He returned to the Caribbean to present Australia with their trophy but his health deteriorated back in his homeland, and he passed away yesterday in Cape Town. "He was immensely popular among the ICC's staff, a friend to me and he could brighten the darkest day because, invariably, he had a smile on his face," said ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed.
"Percy was utterly committed to the game at all levels and his mantras were that the game had to be inclusive rather than exclusive and that it had to be played the right way, to be true to the spirit of cricket."
A lawyer by trade, Sonn rose to the presidency of Western Province and later filled the same role for the South African board.
The process for choosing a new president of the ICC under the organisation's articles means that the ICC Board will appoint an acting president until an election can be held.
